A semi carrying 77,000 pounds of ice cream rolled into a ditch on I-80 near Route 40, closing eastbound lanes for hours. No injuries were reported.
BUREAU COUNTY, Ill. — A semi carrying more than 77,000 pounds of ice cream rolled into a ditch early Wednesday morning, temporarily closing part of Interstate 80 in Bureau County.
The crash happened around 5 a.m. in the eastbound lanes near Route 40, according to Illinois State Police. Troopers say the trailer tipped off the road, blocking traffic and prompting a full closure of the eastbound lanes for several hours.
The truck was hauling a full load of ice cream, police said. Cleanup crews were called to the scene to manage the cargo and clear the roadway.
Traffic was rerouted from I-80 eastbound to U.S. 6 at Annawan East, then to Illinois 40 before returning to the interstate. As of 10 a.m., the highway has reopened.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities have not said whether any citations were issued.
