VERNON — On Sunday, June 8, the Vernon Historical Museum, located in the brick schoolhouse at 4201 Fort Bridgman Road, will open for the summer season. It will be open to the public on Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. (or other times by request) throughout the summer, from June 8 through Sept. 14, and will be closed on July 6 and August 31. The main museum building, formerly Vernon’s District Schoolhouse #4, includes a primary exhibit room, a farm kitchen, a period tool room, photograph collection, and an annex building housing horse-drawn carriages, farm-related tools, an anchor, and many other items of interest.
The museum is maintained by Vernon Historians, Inc., a nonprofit organization. The building and all Historians programs are open to the public free of charge, with donations gratefully accepted.
To celebrate the season opening, the Historians will host their Annual Ice Cream Social with an opportunity to see how ice cream was made the “old fashioned way.” Mama T’s Sweet Spot will demonstrate “slab ice cream making,” and visitors are invited to enjoy a delicious scoop or two. Please bring a lawn chair.
Because we are celebrating 200 years of Vernon’s one-room schools, a short presentation will be made about the small district schools that served the town before Vernon Elementary School was built and opened in 1955. There will be an opportunity to informally share stories and experiences of people who attended those schools.
