Breyers Ice Cream has announced a recall of 6,668 cases of ice cream due to allergen concerns. Specific cases of the brand’s Rocky Road flavor, which contains almonds, were packaged in mislabeled tubs.
The voluntary recall was initiated by ice cream giant’s parent company, Unilever, on June 2, as noted in a Tuesday report from the FDA. The reason for the recall was noted as “undeclared allergens and mislabeled product.”
The report clarified that although the Rocky Road cases in question had incorrectly labeled tubs, they did have the correct lids, which indicated potential allergens.
“Rocky Road Ice was packaged with Chocolate Truffle Ice Cream labeled tub and a Rocky Road Ice Cream lid. Tub said ‘may contain tree nuts’ the lid said it did contain almonds,’” the report read.
The FDA declared this a Class II recall, which is defined as “a situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
The exact distribution of these ice cream cases across the United States is unclear. The FDA reported that the products were sent to “distribution centers and retail locations across the U.S.”
In a statement shared with People, a Breyers rep commented on the recall : “Unilever in the U.S. is voluntarily recalling one lot of Breyers Chocolate Truffle 1.5 quart tubs after some were found to contain Rocky Road ice cream, which includes almonds not listed on the label.”
Customers with allergies should check their Breyers cartons to see if they could potentially be compromised, and if so, dispose of them.
