USA Today’s 10 Best readers’ choice list ranked two California ice cream shops among the best independent parlors in the country, and one is just a few miles north of Salinas.
The list was compiled and voted on by readers from across the country. Readers picked two Golden State beach city establishments to help beat the summer heat.

What are the best independent ice cream shops in the U.S.?
Marianne’s Ice Cream, a family-owned ice cream shop in Santa Cruz, ranked at No. 10 on the list. They have three locations, two in Santa Cruz and one in Aptos.
The shop has been around since 1947 and includes flavors like Heaven, a vanilla ice cream with chocolate swirl, peanut butter swirl, and brownies, USA Today reported.
An’s Dry Cleaning in San Diego was the reader’s choice No. 1 independent ice cream shop.
The ice cream parlor, located at 3017 Adams Ave, was named after the dry cleaning business that first occupied its building, according to USA Today. The made-from-scratch gelato is even named after fabrics.
