Dinner, dessert and a weekend matinee

Dinner, dessert and a weekend matinee

I think I’ve just about recovered from my all-you-can-eat venture at the Gyro Festival last weekend. Which means, I have enough room in my stomach to give y’all some genuine recommendations this week. We’ve got a mix of options in this edition of Brockton Eats with Sam. There are spots to take your kids, a nice date night restaurant and some fun weekend activities too.

There’s a bit of a push and pull between some rain in the weekend forecast and the summer heat that seems to have arrived. Either way, I’ve got you covered with activities both inside and out.

Dr. Ellie Paris Social Bookstore & Ice Cream Cafe, Brockton

I’m sure y’all are getting sick of me plugging the Dr. Ellie Paris Social Bookstore & Ice Cream Cafe, but they are giving away free ice cream to all kids ages 12 and under and I figured you’d want to hear about this. Sunday, June 1 is International Children’s Day and free ice cream is probably just about the best way to celebrate such an occasion.

The cafe will serve ice cream from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., or while supplies last. All children are entitled to one scoop of any flavor they so desire. The Dr. Ellie Paris Social Bookstore & Ice Cream Cafe is located at 278 Main St. in Brockton.

Tamboo Bistro, Brockton

Here’s that date night spot I was talking about. Tamboo Bistro opened in 2005. Since then it’s furnished Brockton’s Main Street with authentic Haitian and Caribbean fare. From fritay to fire-grilled fish, Tamboo is already a favorite spot for plenty of locals.

Now in its twentieth year of business, Tamboo remains a staple of Brockton’s downtown fare. I’m not including it in this list because I don’t think you’ve never heard of it. I’m including it to remind you of its existence. Sometimes we all get complacent in our dinner rotations and we forget about a favorite that — for whatever reason — fell out of the rotation. I’m including Tamboo Bistro to remind you of this: it’s still here.

Tamboo Bistro is located at 252 Main St. in Brockton. They’re open from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 2 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Bridgewater Farmers Market and Craft Fair, Bridgewater

If you’re looking for fun for the whole family, this free event in Bridgewater might be the move this weekend. There will be arts and crafts for kiddos, local suppliers selling farm-fresh produce and booths and stalls filled with homemade and handmade goodies.

Better yet, the market is hosted by the Fire For Effect Foundation, a local non-profit that supports veterans and first responders.

The Bridgewater Farmers Market and Craft Fair is located at 80 Spring St. in Bridgewater. Festivities kick off at at 2 p.m. and last until 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 31.

Two in-theater recommendations, from me to you

Here’s the thing. As of writing this, it’s supposed to rain on Saturday, so I’m going to give you two movie options this weekend in case you need to pivot to indoor plans.

  1. If you haven’t seen “Sinners” by Ryan Coogler (“Black Panther”, “Creed”) go see it. Stop what you’re doing. Cancel your plans. Watch this on the big screen while it’s still in theaters. I cannot recommend this enough. The film is still in most theaters, so you shouldn’t have issues finding tickets. Just maybe leave the kids at home for this one.
  2. The Alamo Drafthouse in Seaport (Yes, I know its a trek but I promise it’s worth it) partnered with filmmaker Celine Song to screen Rob Reiner’s 1989 classic “When Harry Met Sally” on Sunday, June 1 at 12:15 p.m. For fans of the movie, I really don’t think you can turn down the chance to see it on the big screen again. I was born in 2002, so this is really a once-in-a-lifetime chance for me. I am very-very-very excited. With just one screening, tickets are selling fast. Secure them here.
