The Moorenko’s Ice Cream café in downtown Silver Spring is temporarily closed “due to medical reasons,” according to signage posted at the establishment.
Moorenko’s first debuted in 2002 after owner Susan Soorenko learned to make ice cream in New York and gelato from a master maker in Italy. According to HillRag, the brand sources its dairy products from grass-fed cows raised on small, family-owned farms in Pennsylvania.
A Reddit post reveals that the shop at 8030 Georgia Ave. has been closed for several weeks and may not reopen because Soorenko requires surgery.
Moorenko’s products are certified rBST—and antibiotic-free. According to HillRag, the café’s ice cream is classified as “ultra-premium,” boasting more than 16 percent milk fat—specifically 17 percent—making it richer, creamier, and naturally sweeter than other ice creams.
Called “cheaper than therapy,” Washingtonian Magazine editors recognized Moorenko’s Cookie Overload ice cream in 2021 as one of their ten local favorites.
