I ate the Dairy Queen Superman Blizzard so you don’t have to

Mostly Sunny

The Superman Blizzard from Dairy Queen is my own personal ice cream kryptonite.

For starters, it’s blue. I’m a sucker for ice cream that’s dyed blue, especially any ice cream shop that sells “Cookie Monster.” I know the blue dye doesn’t actually do anything. But my brain is convinced that ice cream gains 15 flavor points when it’s blue.

Second, it guaranteed me that none of the toppings mixed into this cup of movie-themed frozen dessert are fully cooked.

The cake? It’s stuck in “batter” form. The cookies? They never got past the “dough” stage.

The sprinkles? Well, hmm, I don’t know if sprinkles are actually cooked, and I certainly don’t want my search history to record me as having asked “are sprinkles cooked?”

Now that would be embarrassing.

The Dairy Queen Superman Blizzard | Review

As far as Blizzard treats go, this isn’t anything new. Dairy Queen has had a “Cake Batter Cookie Dough” Blizzard before.

But this one? It’s got a movie tie-in and it’s dyed blue.

Where I personally got crossed up was the concept of “cake batter cookie dough.” Personally, I thought it would be like “chocolate chip cookie dough,” which meant it would have chocolate chips and cookie dough.

This is not the case. Instead, the ingredients include “sugar cookie dough, sprinkles and cake batter flavor.”

It’s also blue. I cannot stress enough how important it is to me that this ice cream has been dyed blue.

What does it taste like?

The taste is pretty simple. It’s cake batter soft serve with sprinkles and food-safe sugar-cookie dough mixed in.

The problem is that, while eating it, my stupid mouth-brain was all sorts of discombobulated. I kept trying to figure out the difference between the “cookie dough” and the “cake batter.” I was slightly puzzled when I couldn’t find any distinction.

Well, not too puzzled. I was having a great time because I was eating ice cream that was loaded with sugary chunks of flour and butter. I love when that happens.

What also helped confound me was the assumption that the Blizzard was simply vanilla ice cream that was dyed blue. I thought the cake batter chunks were blending into everything.

Nope, the ice cream is flavored. It’s also filled with sprinkles.

So is it any good?

Absolutely.

If you’ve read this far, you’ve probably figured out that the main reason I reviewed this is because it is right in my wheelhouse.

My ice cream brain has never developed from where it was in eighth grade. So here we are, sitting in a drive-thru on a Monday with a golden retriever in the backseat who also wants ice cream, wondering if I should also get the dog ice cream.

It should come as no shock that, yes, the dog also got ice cream.
