LAKE NEBAGAMON, Wis.– Lake Nebagamon is known to be summer staple for the community.
Whether out at the lake for a boat ride or hanging out at the campground.
But located right on the edge of the lake, is a sweeter staple.
“I had my first ice cream cone at the Dairy Queen here in Lake Nebagamon in 1972 and I don’t think a summer has passed since 1972 that I haven’t swung by the Dairy Queen,” recalled Willy Stern, a longtime regular for the ice cream stand.
The former Dairy Queen narrowly escaped closure.
“There are so many people who have come up to me and talked about the fact that they have they’ve been coming here for generations, or their families have been coming here for generations, and it’s just that is so important to me, and it’s been so much fun to be a part of that,” Ed Schwarz, the owner of ‘Dairy & Bean Coffee and Ice cream’
And in true small-town fashion, the word has gone out about the “latest scoop” with what took it over.
“The fact that Ed Schwarz has decided to continue this great tradition. But adding quality coffee on top of that is wonderful for me. But even more so, what a great thing to happen for the Lake Negabamon community,” said Stern.
The new ‘Dairy and Bean’ Coffee and Ice cream will include both of those things.
But down the road, they will include locally made baked goods.
They’re keeping the typical sundaes, malts, and soft serve with fun mix ins.
And they’re excitedly introducing the “Nebagabowl” A delicious blend of vanilla soft serve, hot fudge, cookie dough and brownies.
“It’s what you think about when you go to the lake. It’s what everybody’s memories are of going to the lake and getting soft serve ice cream somewhere.” beamed Schwarz, “So hopefully we can, kind of, I know that the icon that was here is gone, but hopefully we can kind of start something new and iconic that lasts for generations as well. I’d love that.”
The shop is set to stay open for the rest of the summer.
But with the addition of coffee, the possibilties are brewing for an extension.
