The newest location is the popular ice cream shop’s 10th location in western Washington.
SEATTLE — Dozens of people in search of a sweet treat lined up for the grand opening of the newest Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream location on Friday.
The ice cream shop is housed along the southern end of the Seattle waterfront at the historic Washington Street Boat Landing Pergola. The new location offers a covered patio to enjoy your ice cream while overlooking the ferries crisscrossing Elliott Bay.
Bob Donegan, president of nearby Ivar’s and volunteer for the Seattle Historic Waterfront Association, said the popular ice cream chain’s opening is a major benefit for the area.
“For Molly [Moon’s] to open here is great news because it will bring people down here,” he said. On the other hand, visitors heading to sporting events, or anyone taking the ferry or a cruise, will likely pass by the shop – and become a customer, he added.
Seattle’s central waterfront, north of Colman Dock, has 45 retail and food businesses, he said, but from south of the dock to West Seattle, it’s a business desert.
“We need some more retail activity and anchors on the south end of the waterfront,” Donegan said.
In December, Seattle city leaders celebrated a construction milestone in Pioneer Square, part of Mayor Bruce Harrell’s vision to connect the neighborhood to the waterfront. Those updates include new pedestrian crossings, curb-less streets and added green spaces.
The Seattle Historic Waterfront Association has also worked to blend the waterfront with the Pioneer Square neighborhood by improving walkways and the overall environment.
“This is just terrific news for the waterfront,” Donegan said. “Plus, it’s ice cream. We always need ice cream.”
Molly Moon’s previously said it worked with an architectural firm to ensure the design of the shop “retains and accentuates the Pergola’s original beauty.”
The waterfront location is Molly Moon’s seventh location in Seattle and its 10th location in western Washington
