A woman who owned a popular ice cream stand and fast food restaurant in Maine has been identified as the victim of a fatal house fire.Sharon Rainey, 81, of Wilton, died of the injuries she suffered in the fire at her Magrath Road home.Rainey was the owner of the Dutch Treat along Route 2, which has not yet opened for the season.”It’s just too bad we’ve lost her,” said neighbor Carol Oliver. “It bothers me a lot, but there ain’t too much we can do about it, I guess. But we send our prayers.””She always had a smile for you,” said neighbor Ken Oliver.The Maine Fire Marshal’s Office said Wilton Fire Department crews responded to the fire at 62 Magrath Road shortly after midnight Saturday.A neighbor who saw the fire found 84-year-old Robert Adams outside the home, injured from an apparent jump from a window.Authorities said the neighbor and responding Wilton police officers entered the burning home through a window and rescued Rainey from the fire.Rainey suffered severe burns, and both she and Adams were initially transported to Franklin Memorial Hospital. They were both later flown by medical helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where Rainey later died of her injuries.Adams was in critical condition as of Sunday, but a Maine Medical Center spokesperson said his condition had improved to fair by Monday morning.”I think it’s a darn shame. I understand he got burned pretty bad trying to get her out,” said neighbor Nye Mosher.Neighbors said Rainey and Adams were active in the neighborhood, as she could often be seen walking with her nurse while he spent time working in the yard.The fire that claimed Rainey’s life was one of three deadly house fires that happened across Maine during the weekend, according to the Fire Marshal’s Office.At about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, the Caribou Fire Department was notified of a fire at 32 Hillcrest Ave. that left one person dead. Investigators believe the victim is 49-year-old Tony Jackson, but the remains have been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for positive identification.The third deadly fire happened early Sunday morning at 52 Maintenance Lane in Newfield. The two-story home was destroyed and investigators suspect the homeowner, 39-year-old Kristofer Whittemore, was inside at the time of the fire. Human remains were found inside and they have been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for positive identification.The cause of all three fires remain under investigation, but the Fire Marshal’s Office said there is evidence to suggest a chimney fire may have been the cause of the Wilton house fire.
