A popular Pittsburgh ice cream shop handed out free cones Tuesday as a way to brighten up customers’ day, one week after severe storms caused thousands to be without power in western Pennsylvania.Page’s Dairy Mart, located on East Carson Street in Pittsburgh’s South Side, handed out ice cream cones from 4-7 p.m. in an effort to cheer customers up who had lost power and remain without it following April 29 severe storms.”We’ve all had a rough last week,” Page’s employee Daniella Rullo told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4. “We lost power here for a few hours, and we decided that everyone could use a bit of a pick-me-up after last week.”Customers were able to pick up one free vanilla, chocolate, or twist cake cone, with sprinkles being optional. “On Tuesday, we probably had five or six trees fall on our house, and we’ve still been without power,” Pitt alumna Annabelle Cotton said. “As of 30 minutes ago, our power just came back on, and I got service back, and I saw that Page’s was handing out free ice cream, so I had to come.” Rullo said the free ice cream giveaway was also done to further connect with Pittsburghers and to make them feel like a part of the family. “We’ve had so many great customers, and we figured it would be the right thing to do,” Rullo said. “We are a Pittsburgh staple as is, and I feel like we are just so intertwined with everyone here, even if you don’t live close to here. “Cotton said as a fan of Page’s, she appreciated what the local business did to help cheer everyone up following days without power. “Thank you to Page’s. It’s such a Pittsburgh staple, and it makes me feel loved and cared for when all of this stuff has been happening,” Cotton said. “It just feels like the Pittsburgh community.” She continued, saying, “I feel lucky to have power and to have Page’s.”
