A sweet mid-day treat, an after-school surprise, or a date night out. Whatever the occasion, ice cream is always a great choice.
The question is: where is the best place to get ice cream in the Seacoast?
Seacoastonline recently put it to readers in an unscientific poll. First, we asked readers to nominate places to include in the poll on our Facebook pages and our Instagram page, which we then compiled into a true poll asking people to vote for their favorite.
Here are the top seven reader picks:
Winner: Lago’s Ice Cream
Coming in as the crowd favorite is Lago’s Ice Cream, located at 71 Lafayette Road, in Rye. Lago’s has been serving up treats for over 40 years and it’s no surprise they have been voted “Best Ice Cream” several times now. Offering flavors like Albanian Baklava, Cow Pie, Funky Panda, and Salty Sailor, there is a flavor for everyone to enjoy.
First runner-up: Village Scoop Ice Cream
Village Scoop Ice Cream takes the number two spot in best places to get ice cream in the Seacoast. Offering Richardson’s Ice Cream in the heart of York Maine at 286 York St., you can expect to sample flavors like Blueberry Pie, Campfire S’mores, Green Monster and Salted Caramel Pretzel. Village Scoop also offers sweet treats like Scoopuccinos and ice cream cakes.
Third Place: The Beach Plum
In third place we have the Beach Plum. With locations in Portsmouth, Epping and North Hampton, you have multiple opportunities to try its ice cream. Offering flavors like Apple Crisp, Bubblegum, Cake Batter and Toll House Cookie, you’ll have a hard time deciding.
Fourth Place: Aggie’s Ice Cream
Aggie’s Ice Cream, located at 106 Agamenticus Road, South Berwick, Maine, has been owned and operated by the Lincoln Family since 1996. It offers over 100 flavors of ice cream and, according to a recent Facebook post, it will be adding coffee soft serve. Aggie’s re-opens for the season on Saturday, April 19.
Fifth Place: Lone Oak Ice Cream
Lone Oak Ice Cream, located at 175 Milton Road, Rochester, has been serving up homemade ice cream since 1962. The name came from the fact the property had only one oak tree on it when they cleared the land to build. Lone Oak has yet to release its flavor line-up for the 2025 season, but some past special batch flavors included Lilac City Pothole, Southern Banana Pudding and Midnight Mocha.
Sixth Place: The Scoop Deck
The Scoop Deck, located at 6 Eldridge Road, Wells, Maine, will open for its 43rd season on May 23 at noon. The Scoop Deck offers around 72 flavors like Dirty Water, Rum Raisin, Peanut Butter Fudge, or Muddy Turtle, and offers combos you can create for endless flavor possibilities.
Seventh Place: Hodgies Too
The cherry on top to finish off our list is Hodgies Too of Stratham, located at 95 Portsmouth Ave., Stratham. It is a small family-owned ice cream stand featuring its own homemade ice creams and yogurt. You can order up flavors like Salty Caramel Hodge Podge, Danish Almond Cream, Frozen Pudding or go all out with a Peanut Butter Lover’s Sundae.
