Wells Enterprises, the company that owns Blue Bunny Ice Cream, has issued a recall on more than 17,000 tubs of ice cream products because they may contain plastic.
Le Mars, Iowa-based Wells Enterprises issued a recall on April 25 for 103 distribution centers in the U.S. The company also owns brands like Halo Top, Bomb Pop and Blue Ribbon Classics.
What Wells Enterprises ice cream products were recalled?
The recall applies to 22 different products, all in 3-gallon tubs. The FDA classified the recall as a Class II, which means use of or exposure to the product “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.”
Among the recalled products, 14 out of the 22 products came from the Wells Enterprise facility in Le Mars.
What are the potential dangers of consuming plastics?
The consumption of microplastics has been linked to serious health issues, such as endocrine disruption, weight gain, insulin resistance, decreased reproductive health and cancer, according to the United Nations Development Programme.
Although the potential dangers of consuming microplastics is apparent, World Health Organization analysis on current research related to microplastics said there is limited evidence to indicate that microplastics are causing significant adverse health impacts on humans.
