An ice cream flavor with a cult following is back in Western Mass.
Asparagus flavored ice cream, named “Hadley Grass,” at Flayvors of Cook Farm in Hadley, has made its return to the ice cream shop, according to a social media post.
Made with real locally grown asparagus and almonds, the famous flavor has been made at the shop for over 20 years.
The seasonal flavor is a celebration of Hadley’s reputation as the “Asparagus Capital of the World,” bringing in a fanbase of customers.
“We still get people who are like, ‘Wait, no way. Can I have a sample of that?’” Flayvors Manager Debby Cook told MassLive in 2024. “Then I would say seven out of 10 times, they get it.”
The process starts with Flayvors’ usual ice cream base, which is produced with cream from their own dairy cows, but is pasteurized off-site before returning to the farm.
Then, spears of asparagus from Boisvert Farm are boiled and added directly to the ice cream machine. Ten pounds of cooked asparagus are added per batch, which makes roughly four tubs of ice cream.
Looking to try it for yourself?
You can find the flavor at Flayvors of Cook Farm on 129 S Maple St. in Hadley. The shop is open daily from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
