Ag Week kicks off with Milk Monday, featuring ice cream and cows on campus | Campus

Purdue’s annual Ag Week started off with a bang Monday as the Purdue Dairy Club gave out free food, held trivia events and introduced attendees to farm animals. The event ran from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and while they ran out of ice cream fast, the line for grilled cheese and milk stayed long the entire day.

Before getting some food, students could try their luck at the Trivia Tractor, where they’d roll dice and answer trivia questions to win prizes.

Rachel Craun, an agricultural and biological engineering major and Dairy Club member, said that this fit with the club’s goal of education.

Calves are seen on Memorial Mall Monday morning for Milk Monday, day one of the annual Ag Week.

“Getting to talk to students who have never seen a cow before or don’t know that much about dairy is super fun,” she said. “I love how excited everyone gets to answer trivia questions.”

While participants could win inflatable cows at the Trivia Tractor, nearby was the real deal — a pen of two baby cows, only about a month old.

“Every Ag Week we just give the cows names the morning of,” Craun said. “They decided on Queso and Alfredo this year.”

She said the cows came from Purdue Dairy, a teaching farm that works with students in dairy production and animal science fields. While most of the animals there don’t get names, those that got taken to Ag Week were the exception.

Other clubs or student organizations had their own corners of the event for attendees to check out as well. At one table, labeled “Are you a dairy detective?” different glasses of milk were set out for people to try and guess what they were sipping.

The Purdue Ag Council and Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences both took a page out of the Trivia Tractor’s book, hosting tables filled with trivia questions or a wheel for participants to spin to win club-related merch.
