Few things in life may be better than free ice cream, and today is Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry’s.

Since 1979, a year after Ben & Jerry’s was established, the company has given free ice cream to its customers annually.

Free Cone Day started as a simple “thank you” from co-founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield to fans for helping them survive their first Vermont winter. Then, average temperatures hit a record low of 14.1 degrees Fahrenheit, and the winter snowfall set a record of 53.9 inches, according to a March news release from Ben & Jerry’s.

In 2024, over 1 million scoops of free ice cream were given to fans across the U.S. and around the world.

This year’s Free Cone Day falls on Tuesday.

“Free Cone Day has always been about gratitude – we want to thank our fans for being the best fans in the world with free ice cream and a moment of pure joy,” Dave Stever, Ben & Jerry’s CEO, said in a statement. “This year, more than ever, we’re reminded how powerful those small moments of happiness can be.”

Here’s how you can get your Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry’s.
