CHILTON, Wis. (WBAY) – Governor Tony Evers on Monday, took the time to visit an ice cream shop in Chilton as a way of celebrating June Dairy Month.
He’s also learning how that business is benefiting from a dairy processor grant recently awarded.
“We feel incredibly honored and privileged that he is willing to come out to our small little operation to see the impact that a grant makes,” Mark Sosa, owner of Scoops Ice Cream House, said.
When Marko Sosa was strapped for money, he applied for the dairy processor grant.
In 2023, Scoops received a grant from the State’s Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.
Sosa, one of several dairy workers in Wisconsin, sells his ice cream to other shops.
But he wanted to do more wholesale. To do so, he knew he needed to add to his staff.
“The grant allowed us to be able to hire an assistant production manager to increase our production output,” Sosa said.
Governor Evers stopped by the ice cream shop to see how it benefited from the grant.
The money helps businesses that process milk, modernize their plants, and improve conditions for workers.
“Dairy is a several billion industry in Wisconsin, and we’re just happy to get bipartisan support to help dairy folks who are doing, processing milk, the ability to do so, and ice cream is one of those great things to do,” Gov. Evers said.
Sosa is encouraging other dairy businesses to follow in his footsteps and apply for grants like the dairy processor.
“It is a fairly easy way to have an influx of money, to help out with any of the needs they might have, and also be able to help the local economy, especially the dairy industry,” Sosa said.
Sosa said he applied for more grants to expand the production of his business, but right now, that’s in the planning stages.
