Hometown ice cream shop celebrates 30 years of business

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – A hometown ice cream shop is celebrating a milestone.

For 30 years, Katie’s Ice Cream & Chocolates has been serving folks in the Roanoke Valley. While opening in 1995, owners Joe and Cheryl McNamara had a vision of creating a welcoming place for families to come together. That dream quickly became reality and has continued ever since.

“Anytime you start a business from scratch,” Joe said, “you never know how the community is going to accept you. But it has been fantastic. The Roanoke Valley, I love this place, they love Katie’s Ice Cream.”

Joe says this journey has been a blessing and they are expecting to keep it going for a long time.

“It’s so gratifying to see some of our first employees have now grown up and have families of their own and now their children are employees at our store,” Joe said. “It has just been such a wonderful thing for 30 years. We can’t be more thankful for the Roanoke Valley for supporting us all these years and if the good Lord lets us, we plan to do it for another 30 years.”

In honor of 30 years, Katie’s is hosting a week-long celebration. Monday-Friday starting at 5 p.m., a portion of sales goes to a local charity or school.

June 14, Katie’s is having a big event, rolling prices back to 1995. You can get a single dip for $1.19 and a double dip for $1.99 all day.

“It’s hard to choose a favorite ice cream when you have 52 to choose from,” Joe said. “I’m known to have 1, 2, 3 different ones each day, but, if I had to pick a favorite, it’s praline pecan. Put it in a chocolate waffle cone and you can’t go wrong.”
