Thelma’s Ice Cream Sandwiches, a Central Iowa brand, is celebrating its expansion to Costco while maintaining its production in Des Moines.The brand started when a mom, son and daughter took their great-grandmother Thelma’s snickerdoodle recipe and used it to make ice cream sandwiches, first sold at the Des Moines Farmers Market in 2012. Thelma’s first appeared on shelves at Gateway Market in Des Moines, and from there, the brand grew. Despite being sold nationwide, the brand remains loyal to Iowa, with all sandwiches made in Des Moines.”In order for us to protect the integrity of the Thelma’s product and continue its premium deliciousness, we continued making it on our own this entire time,” said Nola Morris, Thelma’s chief marketing officer. “And so it’s super awesome for us to still have our heart beating here. But then have that national growth.”Millions of sandwiches are made in the facility each year. At first, Thelma’s sold one type of ice cream sandwich.
