Few things say summer in Madison like quality time spent on the city’s five lakes. From summertime favorites like swimming, sailing and hanging out on the beach to more adventurous activities, like surfing and scuba diving, there are plenty of ways to take advantage of Madison’s water-based offerings. Here’s a guide to getting out on the lake this summer.
Stick to the Classics
Kick off the summer season with a dip at one of Madison’s 11 free beaches, a guided fishing trip with Madison Angling (or a solo session at a public fishing dock) or an hour of kayaking or paddleboarding with a Madison Boats‘ rental.
Rock the Boat
For a more adventurous spin on paddleboarding, try an hour of yoga on the lake (as in, on top of a paddleboard) at the Memorial Union Terrace, Brittingham Boats or Wingra Boats. For an equally meditative experience, try the monthly full-moon paddles with Brittingham Boats and Wingra Boats. Madison Boats also offers several opportunities for a meal on the water, including burger nights on Lake Monona, Tuesday morning breakfasts from Marigold on Lake Wingra and floating ice cream socials at multiple locations throughout the summer.
Cruise the Lakes
Enjoy a chartered tour around Madison’s lakes with Betty Lou Cruises or The Edgewater — or make it a party with Paddle Pub. More experienced sailors can try their own hand at captaining with pontoon boat rentals from Capitol Boat Club and Madison School & Community Recreation.
Learn Something New
Get a taste of ocean-side life at Redline WaterSports’ two-day surf and wakeboarding bootcamp for kids. Kite Riders offers private and semi-private kitesurfing and -boarding lessons all summer long. To develop skills both in and out of water, try Wisconsin Hoofers — the club offers sailing, windsurfing and scuba lessons. For a fun challenge, head over to Lake Wingra for one of Madison Log Rolling’s classes (choose from drop-in, private, party and at-home options).
