New Fairfield shop serves ice cream with no dyes or preservatives

OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) –

Music… Dancing… and fog machines… gives you a little taste of the atmosphere at the New – Scream Ice Cream shop in Fairfield.

Co-Owner Kate Vigmostad says there are a lot of cooler things to appreciate about the ice cream itself.

“It’s been interesting to see customers coming and really appreciating that we don’t use dyes or flavorings,” Vigmostad explained.

Years ago, Vigmostad and her son were on a mission to make an ice cream with locally sourced ingredients. Beginning with getting unhomogenized milk from just a few blocks away.

Vigmostad said, “It’s the old-school cream at the top whole milk. “

It’s their goal to uplift other local operations making a living for themselves by purchasing all their ingredients, merchandise, and art from local vendors.

Vigomostad said other ice cream shops “buy flavoring that probably has dyes in it… has a lot of synthetic ingredients and lots of sugar.”

Scream Ice Cream’s focus on grass-fed dairy and ingredients in their natural state is appealing to Virginia Van Auken – a mom of three.

“The potential longer-term effects of these dyes that I see on ingredients lists… like – that it sends me running the other way,” explained Van Auken.

Vigmostad said her inspiration is about, “a really simple list of ingredients. “

A passion that Vigmostad looks to share – one scoop at a time.
