JOLIET, IL — Joliet is best known for three long-time ice cream parlors, Walt’s on West Jefferson Street, Rich & Creamy on Broadway and the Dari Delite on Theodore Street. Now there’s another new ice cream shop that hopes to become a major draw for ice cream lovers, and it’s located at 2 Ohio Street on the northern end of downtown Joliet in the shopping plaza anchored by the Niko’s Pizzeria takeout restaurant.
The new ice cream shop is called La Michoacana Platinum and Miriam Gutierrez is the owner. She opened on March 7 and is now open all seven days a week. Her current summer hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
She told Joliet Patch that La Michoacana features 32 different flavors as well as yogurts and Smoothies. The property was vacant in recent years after previously being occupied by a phone store. Some of her most popular flavors are the Oreo, Chocolate Abuelita and cheesecake. Although La Michoacana is primarily a Mexican ice cream shop, she also sells nachos, corn on the cob and hotdogs as well as ice cream bars.
