These are The Republic readers’ favorite foods in metro Phoenix

Yelp released its Top 50 donut shops in the US, according to Elites, shouting out the best doughnut spots across the U.S. While we appreciate the shoutout, we are left scratching our heads at their choice for Arizona — Novel Ice Cream.
According to Yelp: “This is an all-time list of the top 50 donut shops in the U.S. according to Yelp Elites. We identified businesses in the donuts category, then ranked those spots based on the volume and ratings of reviews given by Yelp Elite Squad members for each business.”
Let me start by saying, Novel is one of my favorite spots for a sweet treat, so much so, I dedicated a whole story to one of their dough melts, but as the name indicates, Novel is an ice cream shop with one really delicious glazed doughnut … not a doughnut shop.
Phoenix loves a doughnut shop
Phoenix is rife with both locally-owned, chain and transplant doughnut shops, making all manner of classic and unusual treats. We have over-the-top Portland-based Voodoo Doughnut and tried-and-true California-based Randy’s Donuts. Blooming Donuts in Tolleson makes 54 types of doughnuts. Chin Up in Scottsdale has flavors like wasabi and lavender. And Donut Parlor in Tempe offers a massive 9-inch doughnut. We even have shops that offer vegan and gluten-free options.
We’ve got doughnut shops by the dozen, which makes it all the more curious that we ended up with an ice cream shop representing Arizona as one of the top doughnut spots in the country.
