In a matter of days, Sprinkles Ice Cream in Palm Beach will close its doors after nearly 40 years. The move is sparking owner Anson Ainsworth to open a new chapter for the local dessert staple known for its flavors and nostalgia. He exclusively told WPBF 25 News that plans are in the works to open a new pop-up location on the island. It is big news for many loyal customers who are not happy about its May 26th closure on Royal Poinciana Way. “I am heartbroken. I hope they find a place that’s nearby,” said longtime customer Nancy Schroeder.Ainsworth said the changes are not what he expected. He says the Breakers bought the Bradley Park Building a few years ago with plans to update the structure. However, the project was more extensive than expected.”The extended closure is going to be a minimum of 6 months,” Ainsworth said, “we were told hopefully by the end of the year, and it wasn’t a feasible option for us to be able to continue operations.”People in the community say it’s a shame to see a piece of Palm Beach history shut down. “It’s something that has some charm and uniqueness and some individuality that will be glazed over and turned into something that looks like everything else,” customer Benton Bohannon said. While plans continue to develop, Ainsworth says he’s looking forward to new beginnings in the near future for the neighborhood fixture.
