The moment the weather gets good, there tends to be one of two questions on everyone’s lips: “Aperol?” Or, “Ice cream?” Two small pleasures that can be enjoyed in the winter, but are best consumed when the sun is out and languorous days beckon. And this year, expect the gelato mania to extend to your hands, thanks to the arrival of the ice cream manicure trend.
A play on French and nude nails, the ice cream manicure blends the white tip into the base, adding a creamy (you might say, whipped gelato-like) softness to the colour. Celebrity manicurist Harriet Westmoreland is a champion of the look, having created it for her famous clients (Zendaya and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley among them).
What are ice cream nails?
An update of the classic French manicure, the ice cream manicure is more ombré than anything else, blurring the line between white tip and pinky base. Plus, the glossy top coat delivers the type of sheen you might get from a dollop of golden syrup or treacle drizzled on top. Not to be confused with sheer nails, this represents a middle ground between blocky, opaque shades and the softness of more transparent ones.
