Unilever recalls 6,600 mislabeled cases of Breyers ice cream

While the Rocky Road lid correctly lists almonds as an ingredient, the tub itself is labeled as Chocolate Truffle.

WASHINGTON — Thousands of tubs of ice cream have been recalled because they were mislabeled for allergens, prompting federal regulators to issue a warning to consumers.

Ice cream manufacturer Unilever is voluntarily recalling thousands of mislabeled ice cream cartons after discovering that some containers of Breyers Rocky Road ice cream were incorrectly packaged in Breyers Chocolate Truffle-labeled tubs, creating a potential risk for consumers with nut allergies.

The FDA posted information about the recall earlier this month.

The recall includes approximately 6,668 cases of 1.5-quart tubs of Rocky Road ice cream, distributed to retail locations and distribution centers across the United States, according to the FDA. While the ice cream had a Rocky Road lid correctly listing almonds as an ingredient, it was mismatched with the tubs labeled as Chocolate Truffle and only stating that it “may contain tree nuts.”

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration classified the action as a Class II recall, indicating that exposure to the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences for those with tree nut allergies. No injuries or illnesses have been reported as of June 4.

The affected lot is marked JUL1026GB3 with UPC 077567457288. The recall was initiated on June 2.

Unilever Manufacturing (US), Inc., based in Sikeston, Missouri, began notifying retail partners via letter earlier this month.

Regulators fear that mislabeled ice cream may have been sold to consumers, and could be sitting in freezers around the U.S. Customers are encouraged to check their Breyers ice cream before consumption, especially if they or somebody in their family has a nut allergy.

Consumers with severe allergies to almonds or other tree nuts are advised not to consume the product and to return it to the place of purchase for a refund or disposal.

For questions about the recall, consumers can contact Unilever’s customer service or visit the FDA’s website for updates.
